Windows Phone 7 Mango Running On HTC HD2

HTC HD2 has been released in September 2009 and one might consider it to be an old smartphone, but you can still use it in 2011 because it allows users to install new and improved smartphone OS’ that will make it look like a brand new device.
As you know, the default installed OS that comes with the HTC HD2 is the Windows Mobile 6.5, but you can install Windows Phone 7 and Android OS and both will work smoothly and you might not even know that these OS’ weren’t created for HD2. In this post you will find all the steps that you need to take in order to install the Windows Phone 7 Mango on your HTC HD2 smartphone.
The Windows Phone 7 Mango has been developed by Microsoft and currently it is still in beta stages, but now some hacking teams managed to edit the installation files of the Win Phone 7 Mango OS so that the HTC HD2 users can install it and the surprise comes from the fact that the Microsoft Marketplace works and applications can be downloaded and installed. Before we get tot he first step of the Mango installation guide for HTC HD2, you need to prepare your device for the entire process:
  • HTC HD2 USB data cable
  • The phone battery should be fully charged.
Now you need to download the files listed below. Download them by clicking on their respective names:
  • Download Hard SPL
  • Download Radio that has support for 576 MB RAM
  • Download the MAGLDR 1.3
  • Download the Windows Phone 7 Mango ROM
After you download all the above files, please extract the contents and place them on your computer’s desktop. Now that you have all the required files for applying the installation of Windows Phone 7 Mango OS on your HTC HD2 we can get to the first part of it. We will begin by installing the MAGLDR on HTC HD2 as I think that you have the Windows Phone 6.5 ROM running on your device, while otherwise if you do have the MAGLDR installed you can move straight to part IV of the Windows Phone 7 Mango installation guide.

I. How To Install the Hard SPL

Now you need to learn how to flash the Hard SPL, which is the first step that you need to take in order successfully apply the Windows Phone 7 Mango on your HTC HD2. If your device runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5, it means that the SPL is 1.42 and we need to upgrade it by flashing your the HD2. Here’s are the instructions that you need to follow:
  1. Power off the HTC HD2 smartphone.
  2. Power the HD2 back on and hold down pressed the power and volume key down buttons, which will enable the ‘bootloader mode’.
  3. After the loading of Bootloader mode has been completed you need to connect the HTC HD2 to your computer via USB data cable. If a USB text is displayed in the lower part of the screen it means that the process has been successful.
  4. Now, go to the Hard SPL folder, containing the extracted files, and start the HSPL tool.
  5. A DFT HSPL for HTC Leo installation screen appears and you need to follow the on-screen steps, in order to successfully install the HSPL 2.08 files on your device.
  6. Wait for the installation process to be completed and then go to the next step.

II. How To Flash New Radio With Support for 576MB RAM

  1. Shut down your HTC HD2 device.
  2. Connect the HD2 to your PC using the USB cable.
  3. Power it back on while pressing the power and volume key down buttons, both need to be pressed simultaneously. This will launch the bootloader mode.
  4. Now start the ‘CustomRUU.exe’ program which can be found in the ‘Radio Leo’ folder you previously created on your computer’s desktop.
  5. Follow all the ‘ROM Update Utility for the PDA Phone’ on-screen installation steps and at the final screen you have successfully flashed the Radio support for 576 MB RAM.

III. How To Install MAGLDR

  1. Power OFF your HTC HD2 smartphone and the connect it to your PC via USB cable.
  2. Now, you need to power it back on while keeping pressed both, the power and the volume key down buttons, at the same time.
  3. The bootloader mode has been fully loaded and the ‘USB’ text should appear in the lower part of your HD2 screen.
  4. Start the ‘ROMUpdateUtility.exe’ app from the ‘MAGLDR’ folder that you previously downloaded on your PC desktop.
  5. Follow all the on-screen steps and at the end of this process, the MAGLDR will be successfully installed on your HTC HD2.
  6. When all files been applied, the HTC HD2 boots in MAGLDR and you need to set your HD2 to load the USB flashed mode, do it by pressing the volume key and then press the hardware call send button for the operation to be confirmed.

IV. Install the Windows Phone 7 Mango On Your HTC HD2

  • Open the folder containing the Windows Phone 7 Mango installation files, the one you downloaded and extracted before getting to the first step of this guide. Leave the HTC HD2 connected to your PC.
  • Look for the ‘DWI.exe’ folder and double click it for it to open.
  • DFT Windows Installer For HTC Leo screen should be displayed. Click Next and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Wait for the ‘Installation successfully completed’ screen and click Finish.
  • These were all the steps that you had to take in order to successfully install the Windows Phone 7 Mango on your HTC HD2 smartphone, which now should be booting up into the new Mango OS.
The speed of the Windows Phone 7 Mango while running on the HD2 is great, but some users have complained about it developing some bugs, as it might freeze completely from time to time, but if you carefully handle it, these experience should be rare. In case the devices freezes while running in Win Phone 7 Mango, simply remove the battery and then place it back on and the HTC HD2 will successfully be restarted.
