How To Fix Mozilla’s Firefox Redirects
In the last couple of weeks Firefox has been the target of multiple attacks. And these attacks were mostly “things” that redirect you towards other pages than the desired ones. Those of you who have been infected probably know how hard it is to get rid of such infections. There could be different reasons why this sort of things happens: from virus attacks to simple add-ons installed in Firefox. Regardless of the cause there are a few steps that if you follow you may fix the problems.
1st we will speak about add-ons and extensions that you normally run Firefox with. There have been several attacks through different add-ons that have happen in the last period. The most known problems I think are XULRunner 1.9.1, Zotero, Java Console and Internal Security 1.0. The attacks are made through this means either by inserting different malware in your computer or just opening windows for different viruses. I would recommend simply getting rid of the add-ons.
Viruses and malware are other common factors when it comes to redirects. The issues are present in your registry and I’m pretty sure for most of you browsing through a computer registry is a nightmare. To do so go and click on the “Start Menu” and from there select “Run”. Inside there type “Regedit” in order to open your registry. After getting there you must be sure you have the right folder selected. The main problem finding the “bugs” is that a normal virus makes different entries with different names every time it is activated. So I think you can see the headache of finding and deleting all these nasty “things.”
The proxy settings can also create sometimes undesired redirects. To fix this you should go to Firefox’s “preferences” settings. There are situations when in a browser you can install different proxies without you even realizing this. To see if this is your case click on the “Edit” option and then select “Preferences”. Click on the “Advanced” menu that is located in the far right and from there select “Network” tab. Select the “Settings” button located in the “Connection” section and be sure you have “No Proxy” selected.
There are several solutions to get rid of all the redirects. If for example, you are a person that knows how to handle the registry and delete the unwanted “bugs” inside your system, you can manually start deleting the files. If not I would recommend to download the newest version of Firefox together with Mozbackup and Ccleaner. 1st of all, start running Mozbackup, which is an app that will save all your bookmarks and preferences! Also the same app saves your extensions and add-ons in a list. After that start running CCleaner and from its configuration menu select the option to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it back. Now install the add-ons one at a time and check after each one which is the problem in your case. Simply insert an address and see where the redirect happens.
